Doing good and telling it WELL.
Beyond doing its share for the community, Petron believes in the need to encourage more champions for corporate social responsibility from within and outside the company. Advocacy plays a big part in efforts to make CSR an intrinsic part of the business operation. This includes a continued commitment to uplift the practice of CSR in the country by the sponsorship of and active involvement in the annual celebration of the Corporate Social Responsibility Week, organized by the League of Coprorate Foundations. Petron makes its contributions through the hosting of plenary sessions, providing resource persons in various fora on best CSR practices, and putting up of an exhibit.
Each December, Petron employees make it a tradition to give children (composed of Tulong Aral ng Petron scholars, children of jeepney drivers and children from the different DSWD shelter homes in Metro Manila) a memorable Christmas event through Project Joy. Together, they engage in a day of games, prizes and gifts as they celebrate the holiday season. In 2005, the company added a new dimension to the activity with Project Joy X-treme. This innovation allowed employees and their family members and Petron’s business partners to “adopt” a Tulong Aral scholars and shared one whole day with them.
Internally, Petron is providing children of its employees with a chance to enjoy a fun but informative experience during their school break. Among the favorite courses for the children of Petron employees in the yearly Petron Kids’ Summer Camp are Taekwondo and Art (visual and performing) lessons. An educational trip to different sites in the country is also part of the program.
Intrinsic to the success of all these undertakings is communicating the treasure trove of good stories to every stakeholder. Petron constantly recognizes the power of a well-developed and executed information, education and communications plan utilizing every possible medium to inform the public and more importantly, encourage their support and participation. Its CSR are regularly featured in Petron’s annual reports, brochures and newsletter, and from time to time, in national and local dailies and magazines. These stories are also made available through the internet in our website and via the email and most recently, through the Petron CSR e-Xpress, a monthly electronic newsletter for both the internal and external public.
Petron is actively championing the cause of CSR through its membership and representation in organizations such as the Philippine Business for Social Progress (Board of Trustees, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao Regional Committees), League of Corporate Foundations, Bataan Coastal Care Foundation, Corporate Network for Disaster Response , Junior Achievement Philippines and The Synergos Institute. It also provides resource persons in various speaking engagements and public fora.
